Verizon doubles Early Termination Fees

http://bit.ly/4D9xny (via @iPTIB)

Verizon is doubling their Early Termination Fee (ETF) from $175 to $350 with a montly reduction of $10 as you progress through your contract.

I can't say that I blame Verizon specifically for doing this.  I expect that it is in response to higher subsidies they are paying for smart phones.

However, this does raise the bigger issue of carrier subsidies allowing the price of smart phones to remain artificially high.  If these devices were being sold to consumers at their ACTUAL prices, the market would be adjusting the costs downward rapidly.  Who do YOU know that would be willing to pay $500 for a Blackberry or $600+ for an iPhone at this stage in the game?
